Scarlet Begonias -- Grateful Dead (Hunter, Garcia)
E B A
As I was walkin' down Grosvenor Square,
E B
Not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air,
A E B A E
From the other direction she was calling my eye,
A E B A E B A
Could be an illusion but I might as well try, might as well try.
She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes,
And I knew without askin' she was into the blues.
She wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls,
I knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls.
In the heat of the evening when the dealin' got rough,
She was too pat to open and too cool to bluff.
As I picked up my matches and was closin' the door,
I had one of those flashes, I'd been there before, been there before.
F#
Well I ain't often right but I've never been wrong,
B A E
Seldom turns out the way it does in the song.
F#
Once in a while you get shown the light
B A E
In the strangest of places if you look at it right.
Well there ain't nothin' wrong with the way she moves,
All scarlet begonias or a touch of the blues.
And there's nothing wrong with the look that's in her eyes
I had to learn the hard way to let her pass by, let her pass by.
The wind in the willow's playing "Tea for Two,"
The sky was yellow and the sun was blue,
Strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hand,
Everybody's playing in the heart of gold band, heart of gold band.
As always, could someone please send this and the others to Nevada?
Thanks a
million, and remember any requests for GDead songs send private email
and I'll
post 'em here!

Senor
Words and Music by
Bob Dylan
This is my version of Dylan's "Senor", as played by the Jerry Garcia
Band
on the JGB double disc set. It's probably pretty true to Dylan's
version,
though, although there may be about 1000 more verses that Dylan wrote
and
Jerry didn't sing (Dylan is a rather loquacious songwriter). Each chord
is 1/2 measure (two beats) except for the [F-Em] figure which is 1/2
measure
total. I originally thought that each chord would be one full measure,
but
when I listened to it again, I realised that the actual beat was half as
fast as I thought it was. Listen to the recording if you've got it and
see if you agree. Just for reference, I counted the recording at about
55-60 bpm.
Also, if anybody can fill me in on the spots where I've got ???'s
instead
of lyrics, I'd most appreciate it.

She Belongs to Me -- Bob Dylan/Grateful Dead
Here's the chords to this song. I figured it out from a the version
played by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Jerry Garcia on "Backstage Pass" so
it might not be entirely true to the Dylan version (which i've never
heard)
but I bet it's not far off...

In the end there's just a song

Verse 2

There's just the pavement left and broken dreams
In the end there's still that song Comes crying like the wind
Down every lonely street that's ever been
chorus:

And nothing comes for free
There's nothing you can hold for very long
And when you hear that song
Come crying like the wind
Seems like all this life
Was just a dream

The shoe is on the hand it fits, there's really nothing much to it,
Whistle through your teeth and spit, 'cause, it's alright.
Oh well a touch of grey, kind of suits you anyway,
That's all I have to say, but, it's alright.

TRUCKIN' - GRATEFUL DEAD
Bsus4: x2445x Amaj7: x02120
E A
Truckin' got my chips cashed in, keep truckin' like the doo-dah man
Dallas got a soft machine, Houston too close to New Orleans,
Truckin like the doo-dah man once told me "You got to play your hand.
B Bsus4 A E
together more or or less in line just keep truckin' on.
New York got the ways and means, but just won't let you be.
Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime if you don't lay 'em down.'
E
Arrow of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
Most of the cats that you meet on the street speak of truelove.
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it's all the same streeet.
Most of the time they're sittin' and cryin' at home.
(A?)
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream,
One of these days they know they gotta get goin'
E
hang it up and see what tomorrow brings.
out of the door and down to the street all alone.
A G D A
Sometimes the lights all shinin' on me,
A D A G D A
other times I can barely see.
D B F#
Lately it occurs to me,
Amaj7 E
what a long strange trip it's been.
E
What in the world ever became of sweet Jane?
Sittin' and starin' out of the hotel window,
You're sick of hangin' around, and you'd like to travel.
She lost her sparkleU you know she isn't the same.
got a tip they're gona kick the door in again.
Get tired of travelin', you wanna settle down.
(A?)
Livin' on reds, vitamin C and cocaine,
I'd like to get some sleep before I travel,
I guess they can't revoke your soul for tryin',
E
all a friend can say is "Ain't it a shame."
but if you got a warrant I guess you're gonna come in.
get out of the door, light out and look all around.
E A
Truckin' up to Buffalo, been thinkin' you got to mellow slow.
Busted down on Bourbon Street. Set up like a bowlin' pin.
Truckin; I'm a-goin' home, whoa, whoa, baby back where I belong.
B Bsus4 A E
Takes time, you pick a place to go, just keep trukin' on.
Knocked down, it gets to wearin' thin, they just won't let you be.
Back home, sit down and patch my bones and get back truckin' on.

Intro.: B5 | B5 | B5 | B5 |
Verse 1:
B5 | B5 |
Patience runs out on the junkie,
B5 | B5 |
The dark side hires another soul.
Bsus2 Bm | G/B E7/B |
Did he steal his fate or earn it?
Esus4 E+5 | E5 E6 |
Was he force-fed, did he learn it?
C | C | B5 | B5 ||
Whatever happened to his precious self-control?
(Same chords as verse 1)
Like him, I'm tired of try'n' to heal
This tom-cat heart with which I'm blessed. Is destruction loving's twin?
Must I choose to lose or win?
C | C | B5 | E5 | E5 ||
Maybe when my turn comes I will have guessed.
Verse 2:
A9 | A/G# |
These are the horns of the dilemma,
A | A/G# |
What truth this proof against all lies?
B/A Asus2 | Am F/A |
When sacred fails before profane,
D Csus2 | A5 Go |
The wisest man is deemed insane.
C5 | C | E5 | E5 ||
Even the purest of romantics compromise.
Chorus:
C#m | C#m |
What fixation feeds this fever
C#m | C#m |
As the full moon pales and climbs?
C#m F#m | C#m A |
Am I living truth or rank deceiver?
C#m F#m | C#m A |
Am I the victim or the crime,
C#m F#m | C#m A |
Am I the victim or the crime,
C#m F#m | C#m ||
Am I the victim or the crime, or the crime?
(Same chords as verse 2)
And so I wrestle with the angel
To see who'll reap the seeds I sow.
Am I the driver or the driven?
Will I be damned to be forgiven?
Is there anybody here but me who needs to know
(Chorus chords)
What it is that feeds this fever
As the full moon pales and climbs?
Am I living truth or rank deceiver?
Am I the victim or the crime,
Am I the victim or the crime,
Am I the victim or the crime, or the crime?
